A leisure rider who mainly wants relaxed hacks has different requirements from someone looking for a dressage horse with potential for the higher levels.<\/p><h2>Why do horse prices differ so much?<\/h2><p>With a car, for example, you can compare different models relatively easily. With horses it is different. Every horse is unique.<\/p><p>Two horses can be the same age and height and have the same level of training, and still represent a completely different value. One horse may be very quiet and rideable by almost anyone, while the other has far more quality but needs an experienced rider. A third horse may have good competition results, but also a point of attention on its X-rays.<\/p><p>That is why an advert saying, for example, &#8220;8 years old, Z-level dressage&#8221; is nowhere near enough to determine what a horse is worth.<\/p><p>In the end it all comes down to market forces. At its most basic, every horse is, bluntly put, worth its meat price. Everything on top of that is emotional value, and that value is determined by the balance between supply and demand.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-kp-types elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"kp-types\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What does a leisure horse cost?<\/h2><p>Anyone looking to buy a leisure horse usually wants different qualities from someone with big competitive ambitions.<\/p><p>For many leisure riders, a reliable temperament, being traffic-proof and being easy to ride matter more than spectacular movement or special bloodlines. That does not automatically mean a leisure horse is cheap, though.<\/p><p>A healthy, reliable and well-schooled horse that is easy to ride and, for example, will also hack out alone can be in high demand. Reliability has value.<\/p><p>A cheap horse is therefore not automatically a good buy for a leisure rider. A young or inexperienced horse may have a lower purchase price, but then need a great deal of training and support.<\/p><p><strong>Indicative price:<\/strong> depending on your requirements, you can budget between \u20ac5,000 and \u20ac20,000 for a leisure horse.<\/p><h2>What does a dressage horse cost?<\/h2><p>The price of a dressage horse is closely linked to age, quality, level of training, competition experience and results achieved.<\/p><p>With a young dressage horse, buyers look at movement, conformation, bloodlines, rideability and expected potential, among other things. With a more advanced dressage horse, the following also come into play:<\/p><ul><li>the current level of training;<\/li><li>competition results;<\/li><li>command of the movements;<\/li><li>rideability;<\/li><li>experience;<\/li><li>temperament;<\/li><li>and the potential to progress further.<\/li><\/ul><p>Moreover, a horse that shows the movements for a certain level at home is not automatically worth the same as a horse that has already proved itself successfully at that level in competition. The higher the quality and the further a horse has been correctly trained, the higher the asking price will generally be.<\/p><p><strong>Indicative prices<\/strong>, assuming the horse is healthy, has no (stable) vices and has no exceptional qualities:<\/p><ul><li>from \u20ac10,000 for a young, ridden horse without exceptional qualities;<\/li><li>from \u20ac20,000 for a dressage horse with M-level competition experience;<\/li><li>from \u20ac35,000 for a dressage horse with at least Z2-level competition experience and a confirmed flying change.<\/li><\/ul><p>And really, for every category the sky is the limit. For horses of very high quality the amounts can run into the hundreds of thousands of euros.<\/p><h2>Buying a young horse: cheaper?<\/h2><p>Buying a young horse sometimes seems a way to get a good-quality horse on a smaller budget. And it can be.<\/p><p>After all, a three- or four-year-old has not yet had years of professional training and usually has not yet proved itself in the sport. On the other hand, with a young horse you are buying more uncertainty. How will the horse develop? What will its temperament be like under saddle? What level can the horse eventually reach? Can the horse cope physically with the work?<\/p><p>In addition, a young horse has to be trained on. If you regularly need professional <a href=\"https:\/\/rspequiselect.nl\/en\/training\/\">training or support<\/a> for that, those costs over several years can be substantial. A lower purchase price therefore does not automatically mean a horse ends up cheaper.<\/p><h2>What does an experienced schoolmaster cost?<\/h2><p>An experienced schoolmaster can be surprisingly expensive.<\/p><p>By a schoolmaster we usually mean a horse that is already further trained and on which a rider can gain experience at a higher level. Horses that are not only well trained but also reliable, healthy and easy to ride are particularly sought after. That makes sense: a horse that knows a lot of movements but can only be ridden by a very experienced professional rider is not automatically a suitable schoolmaster for an amateur. It is precisely the combination of experience, reliability and rideability that can make a horse valuable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-kp-factoren elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"kp-factoren\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>How much does age affect the price of a horse?<\/h2><p>Age plays an important role in the price.<\/p><p>A young horse theoretically has many years ahead of it, but still has to be trained. With a horse of eight or nine, for example, it is often much clearer what kind of horse it is.<\/p><p>An older horse can be particularly interesting when it has a lot of experience and is a reliable schoolmaster. The ideal age therefore depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to train a horse yourself? Then young may be interesting. Do you mainly want to enjoy riding straight away and compete? Then an older, experienced horse may suit you better.<\/p><h2>How much does temperament affect the price?<\/h2><p>Temperament is sometimes underestimated when people compare horses online. Yet it can have an enormous influence on both the suitability and the value of a horse.<\/p><p>A horse that is well behaved for the farrier, loads easily, is settled in unfamiliar surroundings and is pleasant to ride has great added value for many buyers. Especially when a horse is meant for an amateur or a younger rider, reliability can matter more than spectacular qualities. After all, a horse must not only be good enough for your ambitions. You also have to be able to work with it comfortably and safely.<\/p><h2>Do bloodlines affect the price?<\/h2><p>With sport horses, good bloodlines can certainly influence the value.<\/p><p>That applies above all to young horses and breeding stock. When a horse has not yet achieved much itself, its bloodlines can give an indication of its possible talent. Still, a famous sire is no guarantee of a good sport horse.<\/p><p>As a horse gets older and is trained further, its own qualities, temperament, health and competition results usually play an ever more important role.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-kp-pony elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"kp-pony\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What does a pony cost?<\/h2><p>Pony prices vary widely too. Moreover, buying a pony is by no means always cheaper than buying a horse.<\/p><p>Good sport ponies and reliable children&#8217;s ponies in particular can be in very high demand. A pony that is well behaved, easy to ride, has competition mileage and can genuinely teach a child something is not easy to find. Here too, age, size, temperament, health, training, competition results and quality all play a part. <a href=\"https:\/\/rspequiselect.nl\/en\/pony-sizes\/\">Size<\/a> matters so precisely that a pony of 1.42 m could be worth thousands of euros more if it were 1.47 m.<\/p><p>For Welsh ponies, German riding ponies, NRPS ponies, New Forest ponies or Belgian riding ponies with studbook papers, in the D or E size, without significant faults and assuming they can be ridden by a (somewhat more experienced) child, you can use the following indicative prices:<\/p><ul><li>from \u20ac5,000 for a three-year-old, unbroken pony;<\/li><li>from \u20ac8,000 for a young pony with a few months&#8217; experience under saddle;<\/li><li>from \u20ac15,000 for a pony with competition experience at M\/Z level;<\/li><li>from \u20ac25,000 for an easy-to-ride Z2 pony.<\/li><\/ul><p>With ponies, too, prices can rise enormously, up to hundreds of thousands of euros for European Championship ponies.<\/p><h2>Why is a reliable children&#8217;s pony sometimes so expensive?<\/h2><p>This regularly causes surprise. A smaller pony can be more expensive than a bigger horse. An experienced children&#8217;s pony that has been correctly trained for years, is reliable and has proved it can guide several children well is scarce.<\/p><p>Buying a cheap young pony and training it yourself may look financially attractive, but it demands knowledge, time and experience. For a young or inexperienced child it is by no means always the most suitable choice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-kp-budget elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"kp-budget\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What is a realistic budget?<\/h2><p>Many people start their search with a maximum budget. For example: &#8220;I am looking for a horse up to \u20ac10,000.&#8221; That is sensible. Your budget largely determines what you can look for. Just try not to compare horses purely on the asking price.<\/p><p>With any budget you will have to make choices. Within your budget you may not find a horse with plenty of competition experience, exceptional movement, a perfect temperament and a completely trouble-free medical history all at once. So decide in advance which qualities are truly essential for you and where you are willing to compromise. That makes the search far more focused.<\/p><p>A realistic purchase budget is not determined solely by what you can pay at most. Also look at what you can spare each month after the purchase. On top of the purchase price you will face costs for livery, the farrier, the vet, feed, insurance, lessons and equipment, among other things.<\/p><p>Want to know more? But always try to understand why a horse is being offered relatively cheaply. There need be nothing wrong with it at all.<\/p><p>Perhaps the horse has to be sold quickly, is still young or inexperienced, or simply no longer suits its current owner. But a low price can also be linked to points of attention regarding health, behaviour, training or rideability.<\/p><p>That is why, with a strikingly cheap horse, it is wise not just to think &#8220;this is a bargain&#8221; but above all to ask good questions.<\/p><h2>Is a more expensive horse automatically better?<\/h2><p>No.<\/p><p>A more expensive horse may have more quality, training or competition experience, but that does not automatically mean it suits you better. Suppose you can choose between a spectacularly moving horse that is sensitive and sharp, and a less eye-catching horse that is reliable and matches your level exactly. For one rider the first horse is the right one. For another rider it is the second.<\/p><p>The best purchase is therefore not necessarily the horse with the most quality or the highest value. A horse is, hopefully, something you buy for several years.<\/p><p>In the end, the question is therefore not just &#8220;What does this horse cost?&#8221;, but above all: &#8220;Is this the right horse for me?&#8221;<\/p><p>The huge supply can make the search for a horse quite difficult.
